New OS!

Support for Ubuntu 8.10 is going to end on 2010-04-30, so it's time to switch to something new. I don't like the way Ubuntu has been taking with their newer releases, especially the upcoming 10.4 :yuck:, so I decided to try out other distributions.

Tested the following distros (in no particular order):
Arch – quick test, not for me 😛
Sabayon – same 😛
Sidux – pretty nice actually, but nah, not for me
Xubuntu – running it on my old machine, it's "ok", nice and light, but wanted something better
Ubuntu 9.10 – meh
Kubuntu 9.10 – Blah! Never really liked KDE desktops, but Kubuntu really rubbed me the wrong way for some reason
Fedora 12 (with Gnome desktop) – with little work might have been worth using, disliked the the way it tried to push users to buying codecs and such

Finally tried Debian, the distro Ubuntu is based on, and I think I will switch to this one.
There are few minor things which I don't like, but with little tweaking… 🙂

  1. Could you please go in details about what you like and/or don’t in the said distros?

  2. I chose Debian for because it-works for me-works in a logical manner-pretty easy to configure to my liking-lots of other users (makes getting tips/help easier)Arch, Sabayon and Sidux just seemed to be too much learning with little benefitsUbuntu has/is making choices that I’m not very happy with (if I want a mac, I will buy one)There are lots of distros out there, if you don’t like how one works or is lead, pick another one and try that. Either you will find something better or you will notice that the old wasn’t that bad after all. In this case I found something better 🙂

  3. You can have Linux either on dual boot or a “virtual machine”. In the first case when you boot the computer you are asked if you want to load Windows or Linux, in the second case you run Windows inside Linux or vice-versa. Of course “virtual machine” needs much more RAM since you have two systems running in the same time.
