Stupid bike thieves

During the last weekend some git stole my bike. Who would steal a poor man's poor bike. If you are stealing why not take something worth something.

I went out and noticed that my bike wasn't there anymore, just a broken lock left.

Footprints were already covered by the snow and most likely the thief used gloves, so I thought that the police couldn't most likely do anything to catch the thief. So I went out searching and yay the stupid thief had driven it about exactly one kilometer and decided that it wasn't worth keeping after all and threw it off the road.

Most likely the gears were frozen to a small gear and not familiar with the bike's gears he had touched front derailleur lever too (which is sort of broken, you can easily go to lower gear, but going back up is trickier :p ). Which would have made the pedaling even slower and the pedaling makes bit of squeaking noises too. So he had enough and threw the bike away. Luckily nothing was broken (that wasn't "broken" already).

Magnum lock, cost between 20-30€ or something like that, can't remember exactly anymore. Lock itself doesn't say what model it is and can't find it online, but maybe I should try to find something better. There were some tiny tool marks on it, but looks like it was just pulled hard and it snapped, clearly a lock failure.

It seems to be a very wanted bike as I bought it from a police auction, at skyrocketing price of 25€. It isn't a great bike, but it is mine and enough for me. Been meaning to keep better care of it and fix the small glitches, but had I done that then the thief might have wanted to keep it after all. Laziness pays off sometimes :p

  1. Good you got your bike back  I laughed for: “Laziness pays off sometimes.” 😆 And yet it can be annoying how little some people respect the property of others.

  2. Here stolen bikes are sold in semi-official open markets. The Police know it but they seem to believe it is not worth it visiting those places. Besides, they don’t find the guilty of about 80 – 90% crimes, so I guess asking to go after bicycle thieves means to ask them a bit too much. There has been a big increase in the business of stolen bikes after the immigration of million foreigners because they don’t have a driving license and they can’t afford a car, so many need a bike. Given that there isn’t any place to legally buy an used one, they go to the places where you can illegally get one.

  3. someone stoled my moms bike,i tracked at 11 pm across town, only to have it took again by my own jackass son..wraping the seat with tape and thumb tacks keeps people from sitting on it,and taping the hand grips with tacks also stops them from grabing them.

  4. Well, two boys stole two bikes of my family in 2002, two old bikes. We are not rich, we are working hard with two bikes, bt two boys took them away just for only 100,000vnd while we could do many.. with two bikes. Two boys grown up somewhere in my town, two bikes would never return, and funny that two boys cant seperate two bikes right moment, papa clocked both by wheel up wheel, body of bike up body of bike and so so. Boys cant handle then they together up 2 bikes in one moment, a passenger saw the case of them bt didnt think why untill he knew that was young thieves. Now, we are still poor. Motorbike was here with us, bt petrol is not small deal. Anyway you have it again. Good luck later!

  5. Your bike was stolen because the thieves can,and do not need a reason, this is the mindset of many, the fact that the bike was worth little is besides the point, these people get a rush(excitement)from stealing anything, such are the brainless ones we have to endure..

  7. I wonder how many people would have gone after it? Great that you got it back.

  8. Out of my experience the best lock is a piece of chain, these are sold by the meter in your DIY stores… Consider weight vs safety though, and a decent padlock.

  9. My opinion is get a better lock. I have an On-guard lock, beast and it works wonders

  10. Bought a better lock pretty much right after getting the bike back and that lock was more expensive then the bike was ಠ_ಠ

  11. At least you didn’t come back home with the bike, only to discover that it was all a clever diversion, and your flat was sacked!
