Testing Ubuntu 9.10

What's up with new Ubuntu releases and removing old things.
I tried Ubuntu 9.10 again and yet again I'm disappointed on it.

The new Ubuntu Software Center is much simpler than the old Add/Remove programs and by simpler I mean dumber. You can only install one program at the time, and it takes a lot more clicks to do it.

Even the default VNC server was dumbed down in 9.10.

Now compare that to the old 8.10 Remote Desktop preferences. You can't change port anymore and no encryption.

This dumbing down seems to affect also other programs, like the DVB television program Kaffeine (it's really a media player, but I only use it to watch TV).

This is the Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) from the old Kaffeine, in the Ubuntu 9.10 version there is no search feature.

I like what Ubuntu has done to linux world, it has made things a lot easier, but maybe I should start looking for alternatives if this dumbing down keeps continuing. Definitely not going to "upgrade" to 9.10.
I will stick to 8.10:

  • as long as the support lasts
  • until I can check out 10.4 and see if it's any better
  • or find better alternative

  1. My problem with the Ubuntu Software Center is that it’s taking a lot more clicks then it should take. It’s a step backwards in usability.I use Xubuntu 9.10 on my other machine, it’s nice and light, but somehow I prefer Gnome. I have also tried Kubuntu, but KDE seems to rub me the wrong way.Still got plenty of time to find a replacement for 8.10 before support for it ends.
